Position Overview

We are currently seeking a dedicated Housekeeping and Laundry Aide to support our Finlandia Nursing Home and Finlandia Village. This role plays a vital part in ensuring our residents’ comfort, safety, and overall quality of life by maintaining cleanliness and hygiene across the facility. You will be responsible for cleaning rooms, sanitizing furnishings, and handling laundry services, including washing, drying, folding, and delivering linens and personal items. All tasks are carried out in compliance with established guidelines and procedures to maintain a high standard of care.

Key Responsibilities

As a Housekeeping and Laundry Aide, your primary responsibilities include:

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing: Ensure all rooms and designated areas meet hygiene and cleanliness standards by following specified cleaning routines and using recommended agents. This includes:
    • Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing floors
    • Spot-cleaning walls, doors, and windows
    • Dusting, washing, and sanitizing furniture, shelves, and woodwork
    • Emptying wastebaskets, rearranging furniture, and handling waste disposal
    • Cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms, kitchen, utility rooms, and other areas
    • Replenishing bathroom and cleaning supplies as needed
  • Respecting Resident Privacy: Ensure that resident privacy and dignity are maintained at all times while performing housekeeping duties.
  • Room Preparation for New Occupants: Thoroughly clean and prepare rooms for new residents, adhering to standard procedures to provide a welcoming environment.
  • Stock Management and Maintenance: Inform supervisors when supplies need replenishing or when equipment requires maintenance. Responsible for returning unused supplies and ensuring that all equipment is properly cleaned and stored.
  • Laundry Services:
    • Sort laundry based on type, weight, and condition, and follow specific care instructions for soiled linens.
    • Operate washing and drying machines, adhering to set procedures for washing cycles and drying times.
    • Sort and fold linens, personal clothing, and set aside items for repairs or ironing if needed.
    • Deliver clean laundry to designated units and maintain the cleanliness of laundry areas and equipment.
  • Adherence to Safety and Quality Standards:
    • Follow department guidelines regarding safety, quality, and infection control, ensuring compliance with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
    • Engage in risk management practices and uphold Finlandia’s resident safety policies.
    • Maintain familiarity with the Health and Safety Manual and relevant provincial legislation.

Qualifications and Skills

To thrive in this role, you will need:

  • Educational Background: Completion of Secondary School Education or equivalent.
  • Technical Knowledge: Basic knowledge of cleaning agents, equipment, and laundry machine operations.
  • Organization and Instruction Comprehension: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and effectively organize your workload.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with isolation procedures and ability to handle specific laundry treatment instructions.
  • Language Skills: Finnish language skills are an asset, though not required.
  • Compliance Requirements:
    • Recent (within six months) Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
    • Recent (within six months) 2-step Tuberculosis (TB) test.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role requires physical endurance and attention to safety due to:

  • Frequent Physical Activity: Extensive standing, walking, bending, and lifting, including frequent squatting and reaching.
  • Exposure to Hazards: Handling power equipment, working with cleaning agents, and occasional exposure to wet floors.
  • Potential Interruptions: Adaptability to address resident needs that may arise during tasks.
  • Environmental Conditions: Indoor environment where conditions may vary, such as high temperatures, humidity, and strong odors from soiled laundry.
