Stephanie Ip Photography, a leading name in the photography industry, is looking for a creative and skilled Freelance Photographer Assistant. This is a flexible and exciting role for individuals who enjoy supporting photographers on outdoor shoots and working behind the scenes to ensure successful sessions. While direct photography experience isn’t required, it is beneficial if you have a keen eye for capturing beautiful moments and telling stories through images or video. This position allows for flexibility in scheduling and offers opportunities to work on various photography projects for direct-to-customer clients.
Key Responsibilities
As a Freelance Photographer Assistant, your main job will be to provide support to the Lead Photographer in a range of photoshoots. This role requires adaptability and a passion for the art of photography, even if you’re more focused on assisting than taking the photos yourself. Here are some of the primary duties involved:
- Assist with Photoshoots: You will help produce top-quality photographs for various projects, including:
- Events (weddings, corporate events, etc.)
- Portrait photography (individual and family)
- Product photography
- Lifestyle photoshoots
- And more
- Client Collaboration: You will assist in working directly with clients to ensure their vision is captured perfectly. Your role includes helping to communicate effectively with clients and delivering photos that align with their expectations.
- Video Content Creation: If you have experience in video production, you may assist in creating engaging video content. This involves basic knowledge of filming and video editing, using software such as Adobe Premiere. Helping with post-production edits and creating visually appealing video content is a plus.
- Creative Input: Your role involves assisting in providing creative input during photoshoots. Whether it’s about how to improve the shot’s composition or adjusting the lighting for better visuals, you’ll be encouraged to share your ideas and contribute to the art direction.
- Photography Process Management: You will help manage all stages of the photography process, from planning shoots and coordinating schedules to organizing equipment and assisting with post-production editing.
Skills and Experience
While formal experience isn’t mandatory, candidates with some background in photography and photo editing are strongly preferred. Here are the key qualifications we’re looking for:
- Photography Portfolio: It’s important to have a portfolio showcasing your skills in various types of photography, like portraits, event photography, or commercial shoots. This demonstrates your ability to adapt to different styles and environments.
- Photo Editing Proficiency: You should have a basic working knowledge of popular photo editing software, such as:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Lightroom
These programs are key for editing images and enhancing their quality in post-production.
- Video Production Skills (Optional): If you have experience in videography and video editing, it will be a significant advantage. Using tools like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro to edit footage and produce high-quality videos is a highly desirable skill.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite: Along with Photoshop and Lightroom, having some understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite (such as After Effects, Premiere, and InDesign) will help you contribute to various creative projects.
- Understanding of Lighting and Composition: Knowledge of lighting techniques and how to compose a good photograph is essential. This will enable you to assist in setting up the perfect shot during photoshoots.
- Strong Communication Skills: The ability to communicate well with clients and team members is crucial. You’ll need to be able to listen to the client’s needs and collaborate with the photographer to meet their vision.
- Multitasking and Time Management: You’ll often be working on multiple projects at once. Being able to manage your time effectively and juggle different tasks is key to success in this role.
Job Type & Compensation
- Job Type: This is a part-time, freelance position. You will be working on-call, with flexibility in your schedule.
- Pay: Compensation ranges from $30.00 to $40.00 per hour, based on experience and the nature of the work.
- Expected Hours: The expected hours will not exceed 10 per week. Most shifts are 4 hours long, offering flexibility to fit this job into your current schedule.
Benefits of the Role
As a Freelance Photographer Assistant at Stephanie Ip Photography, you’ll enjoy several benefits:
- Flexible Schedule: You’ll have the ability to control your work hours. Shifts may be Monday through Friday, with some weekend shifts if needed. This flexibility makes the role perfect for individuals seeking work-life balance or those who need part-time work to fit around other commitments.
- Opportunity to Relocate: If you’re not currently in Los Angeles, CA, you must be willing to relocate before starting work. Los Angeles is a vibrant city for creative professionals, offering countless opportunities to grow your photography career.
Work Environment
This is an exciting opportunity that involves working outdoors and on-location for most shoots. You will be traveling with the lead photographer, helping to set up and manage photoshoots at various locations. The job offers a chance to work in a dynamic, creative environment where no two days are the same.
The fast-paced nature of outdoor shoots requires adaptability, a positive attitude, and an eagerness to help wherever needed. You’ll be on the road a lot, meaning this role is ideal for someone who enjoys being out and about rather than sitting behind a desk.
