Job Summary
As a Cleaner for the Lambton County Library system, your role is to maintain a clean and safe environment for staff and visitors in public libraries and theaters. You will follow cleaning procedures to ensure spaces are hygienic and meet set standards. The position plays an essential part in delivering a high-quality library service aligned with the strategic goals of the Lambton County Council.
Main Responsibilities
Your duties will include cleaning and maintaining all areas of the facility according to established guidelines. This includes public areas, private staff spaces, and theater spaces. You will be responsible for ensuring cleanliness and safety by using appropriate cleaning methods and materials. Below is a detailed list of responsibilities:
- Cleaning Public and Private Spaces:
- Follow established cleaning routines and checklists to make sure all areas, including theater spaces, meet cleanliness standards.
- Use appropriate equipment to mop, sweep, and vacuum floors in designated areas.
- Restroom Maintenance:
- Clean and disinfect bathrooms, including sinks, countertops, toilets, mirrors, and floors.
- Replenish bathroom supplies such as paper products and soap.
- Polish metalwork like fixtures and fittings to maintain cleanliness.
- Kitchen and Lounge Cleaning:
- Clean kitchen areas including countertops, sinks, tables, and appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers.
- Ensure cleanliness in lunchroom and server areas by following Ministry of Health guidelines.
- Keep supplies fully stocked in these areas when needed.
- Furniture and Equipment Cleaning:
- Dust and wipe down surfaces, desks, chairs, shelving, and computer equipment.
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, phones, and light switches.
- Waste Management:
- Empty trash bins and recycling containers, transporting waste to the appropriate disposal areas.
- Detailed Cleaning:
- Clean woodwork, windows, doors, partitions, window sills, handrails, stairs, and walls.
- Report any potential problems, such as evidence of pests, water leaks, or mold, to supervisors.
- Documentation:
- Complete and submit cleaning checklists every week to ensure accountability and that standards are met.
- Mobility:
- Be available to travel to various facilities as required by the job.
Customer Service and Communication
- You are expected to interact with the public, coworkers, and community partners in a friendly and courteous manner. This includes creating a positive and cooperative work environment.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Keep updated on the County’s Health and Safety policies.
- Attend health and safety training and stay aware of any potential hazards.
- Follow safety guidelines, such as using Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and ensuring compliance with WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
- Ensure cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) are well-stocked and report any supply needs to management.
General Responsibilities
- Stay informed about any new legislation, union agreements, or County policies that affect your role. Ensure all these guidelines are followed.

Requirements
Education
- A minimum of a secondary school diploma is required.
Experience
- At least three months of experience in cleaning or related work is required.
